Critical parts of post play

bulletLow body balance base of support - wide and low - Maximum balance and optimum quickness
bulletCompact - see hands when posting - keep ball close to body - tight with your game - explosion from being compact
bulletEconomy of motion - no wasted movement - 60% weight on pivot foot to eliminate travel coach can put his foot on pivot foot so player can feel travel - feel the move - less is more - simple is better.

Making Moves

1. GET OPEN

bulletGet work done before you catch the ball
bulletV-Cut - take lower, take higher, then explode
bulletFinally, put body on first (don't just turn around)
bulletSeal as close to basket as possible, try to catch with both feet in lane
bulletSeal the defense - Don Nelson Move (face lane, foot in crotch, leg whip)
bulletMove to open area - I-cut on penetration, draw and kick

2. STAY OPEN

bulletSeal and push step; show your numbers
bulletSit on front leg of defender with push step
bulletMake sure the ball can see you
bulletBack straight, head up, weight back for knee bend and light feet. Fight front leg.
bulletCall for the ball
bulletHold your seal - Don't chase ball

Drills for Developing Your Catching Skills

bullet1. Bad pass reaction
bulletCatch ball with your: feet (get behind ball), eyes (look ball into your hands), hands (hand behind ball to block it).
bulletCHIN BALL
bulletPush yourself and your practice mate. Do not be afraid of making a mistake.
bullet2. Back to the passer (you can score off these)
bulletOne hand catch - learn to block the ball
bulletTwo ball passing - odd size balls, crazy ball
bulletBack board slams and power, make layups clean
bulletHands, Heart and Head - Keys to great post play.

3. RECEIVE SAFELY AND SCORE SIMPLY

Coaching Points for Jump Hook

bulletReceive as deep in the paint as possible
bulletMake quarter turn in air as you catch to get closer to rim
bulletPoint shoulder at the rim
bulletBall off your ear

Grooving the jump hook - 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock

bullet11:00 release if right-handed
bullet1:00 release if left-handed

Step, bounce, hop

bulletVary your rhythm, slow down, change speeds
